Monte Grappa in the program of Giro d’Italia

Monte Grappa sits in the Veneto region, and depending on the route taken, it can be incredibly brutal—like the route from Semonzo, which averages around 8% over 19 km but kicks up way higher in spots. It’s long, steep, and relentless.

In the Giro, Monte Grappa has often been used as a late-stage climb, sometimes even with a summit finish or as a lead-in to a finale in places like Bassano del Grappa. When it shows up in the last week of the Giro, it’s usually because the GC is about to get shaken up hard.

Introduced to the race during 1968, Montr Grappa appeared in the program of Girod’Italia only seven times.

1968 – Stage 10 (Trento to Monte Grappa)

First summit finish on Monte Grappa.

    Stage winner: Emilio Casalini.

1974 – Stage 20 (Misurina to Bassano del Grappa)

Climbed from the north via Caupo.

Eddy Merckx won the stage after descending into Bassano del Grappa.

1982 – Stage 16 (Comacchio to San Martino di Castrozza)

Monte Grappa served as a significant climb before the final ascent.

    Stage winner: Vicente Belda.

    2010 – Stage 14 (Ferrara to Asolo)

Climbed from Semonzo via the SP140 route.

Ivan Basso was first over the summit; Vincenzo Nibali won the stage after a daring descent.

2014 – Stage 19 (Individual Time Trial from Bassano del Grappa to Cima Grappa)

Mountain time trial finishing near the summit.

    Stage winner: Nairo Quintana.

    2017 – Stage 20

Climbed from the north via Caupo.

    Stage winner: Thibaut Pinot.

2024 – Stage 20 (Alpago to Bassano del Grappa)

Featured a double ascent from Semonzo.

Tadej Pogačar attacked on the second climb, securing his first Giro d’Italia victory.
